For Storage Items...

The "Search | For Storage Items..." command command provides a facility to seach the database(s) for a specific item. It is possible to search on any item column in the InView database or search using multiple criteria.

When chosen, the "For Storage Items..." command creates a simple dialog box that allows you to define a search query and submit it to the database. The dialog box will then display the storage items that match the search criteria in a list box.
The "Client Names" pull down list is active in editions of InView that are authorised to view more than one client database. It provides the same function at the "Control | Set Working Client.." command does. When a new client name (or the "All Clients" option) is selected from the pull down list, InView's working client is changed to the new choice.

The "Selection Criterion" controls allows you to select a search criterion. The first control is a pull down list, containing all the items that can be searched for (creation date, etc.) as item as a "select all" option. Once any option other than "select all" is chosen, the remaining selection criterion controls become active. The second selection criterion control is a pull down list that provides the search options (is equal to, is not equal to, etc.). After the desired option is selected, enter the search value into the third selection criterion control, a text edit box. Once all three selection criterion controls are set, press the "Add To Query" button at the bottom of the dialog box to enter the search criterion. After the criterion is entered, additional criteria can be likewise defined and entered, until the desired query is constructed. The "Run Query" button then submits the constructed query.

The "Conjuction" radio boxes become active when a search criterion has already been defined with the search criterion controls and then entered with the "Add To Query" button. The conjunction options ("and" and "or") are used to add a new selection criterion to a previously defined query. So you can look for storage items that satisfy the first criterion and the second criterion, or for storage items that satisfy the first criterion or the second criterion (note that the "or" is inclusive).

The "Current Query" box displays the query as it is currently defined (after pressing the "Add To Query" button). The query is presented in English, one criterion per line. The query is however not sent to the database until the "Run Query" button is pressed, at which time the query is converted to an SQL Server query, encrypted, then sent to the database.

The "Results" box displays the storage items that satisfy the submitted query, after the "Run Query" button is pressed. Individual storage items in the results box can be selected, and once selected can be displayed in more detail by pressing the "Display Line" button.

The "OK" button dismisses the search dialog box.

The "Display Item..." button is active when storage items are displayed in the results box and an individual item is selected. When pressed, a dialog box is produced that displays the select item in detail (it is the same dialog box that the "View | Storage Items..." command produces).

The "Add To Query" button is active when a selection criterion is fully defined by the selection criterion controls. When pressed, it adds the defined selection criterion to the "Current Query" box.

The "Clear Query" button is active when a query is defined in the "Current Query" box. When pressed, it clears the defined query and empties the "Current Query" box.

The "Run Query" button is active when a query is defined in the "Current Query" box. When pressed, it sends the defined query to the database to be run (after it converts the query to the equivalent SQL statement and encrypts it). The results from the query submission (if any) are then displayed in the "Results" box.

The "Add Items..." button allows the user to "doctor" the query results (displayed in the "Results" box) by adding additional storage items directly to the results box without defining query. This can be useful if you want to print out or export a specific list of storage items.

The "Delete Item" button is active when storage items are displayed in the results box and an individual item is selected. It allows the user to "doctor" the query results by deleting the selected item. This can be useful if you want to print out or export a specific list of storage items.

The "Clear Items" button is active when storage items are displayed in the results box. It clears the results box.

The "Print" button is active when storage items are displayed in the results box. When pressed it will print the results list.

The "Print Preview" button is active when storage items are displayed in the results box. When pressed it will present a preview of the page created when the results list is printed.

The "Export To Excel..." button is active when storage items are displayed in the results box. When pressed it will export the results list to an Excel file. The standard windows "Save As" dialog box appears, asking you to name the Excel file into which the results list will be exported. Excel is then started up and the newly created file opened.

The "Export To Text..." button is active when storage items are displayed in the results box. When pressed it will export the results list to an ASCII text file. The standard windows "Save As" dialog box appears, asking you to name the text file into which the results list will be exported.
